” Soccer is a sport that unites us; it brings out the best in us and makes us play as a team. You may disagree, but how could 3.5 billion people be wrong? Yes, approximately 3.5 billion people either play or have an interest in soccer. That’s about half the world!

It’s a game where the fans are equally as important as the players. In stadiums the supporters can create an atmosphere so intense it makes the earth tremble and the stars cry for their mothers. Like a baby who needs the bathroom, there’s no stopping the fans.

One such weapon of mass destruction is the vuvuzela. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about. It’s a trumpet like object, about half a meter in length. It can be decorated with many different colours and beads and it sure makes one helluva noise. In a stadium where there are people with vuvuzelas the noise levels can reach up to 100 decibels. To put this in perspective, anything above 85 decibels puts you at risk of going deaf

Soccer has often lifted people (especially kids) out of poverty. An example would be Didier Drogba. He plays for Chelsea who won the English Premier League. He also contributed as the top scorer of the tournament with 29 goals. He has had a very humble beginning in Cote d’Ivoire located in the north of Africa. Despite all his hardships, he still fought through it and rose up and became on of the best soccer players in the world

Football as it is also known gives us a common belief. We are blessed to be the hosts of the 2010 FIFA World Cup where it is said that 150 000 people are coming to South Africa to support their country, out of the 32 countries chosen. The final of the World Cup will be here in Johannesburg at our brand new stadium called Soccer City in Soweto (South Western Township.)Soccer City can house up to 90 000 people at one time. Italy are the reigning champions when they beat France in 2006 in Germany.

No matter how old you are, where you come from or who you are, soccer is the beautiful game loved by millions. ”  Emilio Z age 13
