Waiting for Natalie

I am 39 weeks pregnant and waiting for our little Natalie to be born. It’s been a roller coaster ride, and as the time approaches a deluge of emotions come running down- excitement, anxiety, happiness, fear, impatience.

When I first fell pregnant I counted the months to her arrival, then the weeks, now I am counting the hours.

Work commitments have slowed down and I find the photography books being put aside for a short time and being replaced with books that cover philosophy, psychology and spirituality.

Waiting for Natalie has forced me to slow down, stop and reassess my life.

As the hours pass I get more excited to meet her, and to begin an amazing journey together.

Looks like my car is not firing on all 4 cylinders. I think it’s the universe telling me to slow down. Just spent the last 2 hours at Sandton Mercedes Benz, ouch what a waste of precious time. Anyway that’s life we win some and other things need a bit more patience.

Sitting in a small coffee shop in Colesberg, Gossip, waiting for our breakfast.

There is no hurry, there is no urgency.

The wonders of small towns. Things will happen, they may take a little longer but in time breakfast will come we will eat and move on. In the process we will have met some friendly locals, had a home cooked meal and experienced another beautiful small South African town op pad to the next one.

Sitting quietly in bed whilst the world goes to sleep, I reflect over the last two days. Tomorrow I go back to work after a short break and dread the idea of catching up.

Ever day we run from pillar to post trying to catch up. I often wonder, will my to-do list ever be completely done. Probably not, there will always be another item to add, another task to be completed or another activity to be diarized. So, life is hectic and it is very unlikely that it will change.

I have noticed the trick is to enjoy the pauses in-between. Play with your kids, spend time with those you love, enjoy your pets, sit and watch the wind move through the trees. Do the little things we never put on the to-do list.

When life gets busy and a little out of control- stop, breathe and just for a moment enjoy the pause.

Thirty Seven

The other day someone made me aware of how we take so many things in our lives for granted. We spend our days so self-absorbed that we do not see the wonders of life happening around us. I have decided that for the next 37 days, I am going to be more aware. I am going to find the things about my life that I need to appreciate, the things that make me smile. Little things, big things, all sorts of things/actions/people.

Why 37? Well this year I turn 37 and it is time celebrate life and live it for what it is- magical, unpredictable and delicate.

The African Landscape

Spending a few days in the bush is an awesome experience. Africa has many challenges but it is also has many beauties. One of them is that we can access nature easily. There is nothing more beautiful than the sight of a troop of elephants, the call of a fish eagle and the hot sun warming your soul.

Whilst on a morning drive we stopped at a rest camp, there was a very charming older man, Joseph. Joseph runs and takes care of this spot in Africa. During his spare time he makes the most beautiful pieces of “art” out of used cans. They are not something we all want in our homes but here is a man who is entrepreneurial, innovative and totally original. Imagine we could all have these qualities and attitude towards life.
